Analysis and Outline

Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91LQWQEyD8w
Analysis:

Outline
Intro: The widely known "Somebody's Watching Me" theme is played to two scenes; the first one features a basketball player, and the second one a man at a diner.

Hook: do you remember all the different and funny geico commercials from the past? They approach selling insurance in a very unique way. In the past they have includedcavemen, a lizard and a catchy song. The song is the most familiar aspect of their past commercials for me.
Thesis: The following commercial from 2009 has a specific purpose and is quite effective. The purpose is to use humor to sell insurance using humor. The commerical is somewhat effective in promoting their ideas.

Purpose: the commercial is trying to use comedy to advertise their insurance company.
Transition 1
the commercial is aimed towards promoting GEICO's insurance company. It is quite clearly an advertisement. I noticed towards the end that they were trying to sell something to me. The familiarity Of the commercial made it clear that they are trying to sell insurance.
In one scene, a dude is shooting a basketball and the music starts playing from a wad of cash.

Effectiveness: the commercial is effective in maintaiining the audiences attention, and promoting their idea.
Transition 2
The commercial is somewhat effective at selling insurance. I noticed a few things. For example the music kept me engaged within the commercial and would make me less likely to change the channel. It keeps me engaged which is quite effective. They also make it quite clear what they are trying to sell to me. The comedy of the ad can almost distract the audience from what they are trying to sell. I thought the two seperate scenes were really effective together within this commercial.
Conclussion:

Revision:

My first revision is actually the commercial I used. I changed the commercial so it within five years. In addition that it is significantly longer and allows me to add more details to my speech.

Intro:
What do most people think of when they here the company GEICO. It is almost the green lizard from a lot of their previous commercials. However, this commercial is different from the stereotypical “oh there’s a talking lizard to explain insurance to us.”

The one minute Geico commercial from 2018 has a specific purpose in which the Insurance company tries to use comedy and a relevant or recent event to promote their company. In a sense, the commercial isn’t intended to inform us of their policies but rather to keep their company fresh in our minds. The companies commercial does this with some effectiveness, as it certainly stuck in my mind.
Purpose
The GEICO commercial was created with a specific purpose in mind. The purpose of the commercial was to use that one overrated Stefon Diggs catch from the Playoffs last year.
The commercial starts out with the Minnesota Vikings WR Stefon Diggs in a sketch. Within this sketch he is trying to make a bowl of cereal. The cereal sticks to his hands, and is impossible to poor because everything sticks to Stefon Diggs hands. In the end he gets it done, overall the commercial is referencing how he never drops a ball and his game winning touch down against the saints. I personally believe he is overrated.
Also, it is important to note that the only words said that truly advertised the  insurance company was maybe five seconds at the end of the commercial where a narrator says ”believe it, geico could save you 15% or more on car insurance”. That alone makes it quite clear, that purpose of the commercial is not to inform the audience (people who are watching the tv)  of their policies. But rather the purpose, is to have the company just stick in the minds of the audience.
The comedic aspect of the commercial also hints to the purpose being an attention grabber. No serious commercial is going to include this sketch. Nobody thinks, lets make an overrated football player the star of our insurance commercial.

Effectiveness
The commercial is effective to a certain degree. The commercial is really effective at maintaining the audiences or viewers attention. The comedic aspect of the commercial helps make the commercial effective in terms of their purpose.
For example, the comedy truly adds to the commercial. In particular, the Stefon Diggs commercial it was funny and that can keep people from changing the channel or just immediately forgetting it right after.
What I thought that was not really effective in particular was that the commercial had no words within it, Nobody really talked until the very end of the commercial, which is when the narrator said for a few seconds “GEICO COULD SAVE YOU 15% OR MORE ON CAR INSURANCE”. If their purpose was to inform us about the insurance company they would have been very ineffective.

But rather, the commercial was a bit effective at somewhat effective at making us laugh and ensuring we remember the commercial. It is easier to associate a company with something positive when their commercials had made you laugh.

Conc.

In conclusion, the Insurance company tries to use comedy and a relevant or recent event to advertise their company. In a sense, the commercial isn’t intended to inform us of their policies but rather to keep their company fresh in our minds. The company is somewhat effective at fulfilling their purpose. Geico does a great job of using humor and current events to ensure the audience doesn’t change the channel.
